On July 21, 2018, the inaugural meeting of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence Research of University of Science and Technology Beijing and the first meeting of the first academic committee were held in conference room 306 of the office building. Wu Hequan, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chairman of Internet Society of China, Director of Academic Committee of Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, Gui Weihua, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor of Central South University, Xie Jianxin, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor of University of Science and Technology Beijing, President Yang Renshu, Vice President Xue Qingguo, Wu Aixiang, as well as members of the Academic Committee of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence, leaders of relevant departments and departments of the school attended the conference.

Yang Renshu, on behalf of the school, congratulated the establishment of the institute and expressed heartfelt thanks to the experts for coming. In his opening speech, he said that artificial intelligence is currently the world's most concerned technological frontier, an emerging driving force leading the world's development, and an important strategic opportunity for my country to achieve leapfrog development. The 121st Standing Committee of the 11th Party Committee of the school decided to establish the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute of University of Science and Technology Beijing. This is not only a major initiative to actively respond to and implement the State Council’s "New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan" and the Ministry of Education’s "Artificial Intelligence Innovation Action Plan for Colleges and Universities", it is also the school's combination of disciplines and professional characteristics and research platform advantages to promote the integration of multiple disciplines , Collaborative innovation, in-depth promotion of innovative deployment of the construction of "first-class disciplines". The school attaches great importance to and strongly supports the construction and development of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence, and has high hopes for the Institute of Artificial Intelligence.     Subsequently, the first meeting of the first academic committee of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence was held. The meeting was chaired by Academician Wu Hequan, the director of the academic committee.

Professor Long Keping, Dean of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence Research, University of Science and Technology Beijing and Dean of the School of Computer and Communication Engineering, reported on the construction plan of the Institute. Long Keping said that in order to meet the needs of national development for artificial intelligence, our school established an artificial intelligence research institute based on the advantages of disciplines, related platforms, and affiliated societies. It consists of the School of Computer and Communication Engineering, the School of Automation, the School of Mechanical Engineering, the School of Metallurgy and Ecology and the key laboratory and research center of the Faculty of Engineering . Professor He Wei is the executive vice president, and Professor Cao Jianguo and Professor Ma Huimin are the vice presidents. The Institute of Artificial Intelligence will focus on the 6 main research directions of artificial intelligence computing basic theories and methods, key technologies of intelligent big data systems, intelligent autonomous control of unmanned systems, intelligent perception and knowledge automation, intelligent manufacturing, intelligent mining and intelligent metallurgy. The institutes continue to advance towards the goal of promoting discipline construction, cultivating outstanding talents, and strengthening international cooperation and academic influence in the field of artificial intelligence.

The members of the Academic Committee of the Academy conducted exchanges and discussions on the organizational structure, construction plan, and expected goals of the Academy. In his closing speech, Yang Renshu expressed his gratitude to the members for their valuable comments and suggestions. The school will resolutely implement the decisions and deployments of the school’s party committee, further strengthen cooperation with relevant units, innovate the institutional mechanisms of the AI Research Institute, and work hard in the field of AI Gather a group of world's top talents, improve the original innovation ability in related fields, and strive to make greater contributions to the construction of artificial intelligence disciplines and industrial development.

The Artificial Intelligence Research Institute of University of Science and Technology Beijing adopts a board governance model that is in line with international standards, that is, the dean responsibility system under the leadership of the board. Xue Qingguo serves as the chairman of the board of directors of the institute. At the same time, an academic committee was established, consisting of 8 academicians, 16 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, a number of national "Ten Thousand Talents Program" leaders, chief scientist of the 973 project, IEEE Fellow, and director of the State Key Laboratory.

The Institute of Artificial Intelligence has six research centers, namely the Intelligent Technology and Big Data Research Center, the Intelligent Communication and Broadband Internet of Things Research Center, the Intelligent Control and Unmanned System Research Center, the Intelligent Perception and Knowledge Automation Research Center, and the Intelligent Manufacturing and Brain Science Research Center, Intelligent Metallurgy and Mining Research Center.
